Toby Koenigsberg - Sense
by Dan McClenaghan, All About Jazz

On Sense, pianist Toby Koenigsberg's trio offers up a wistful and straightforward take on the American Songbook classic "My Foolish Heart," including a poignant, spare reading of the familiar melody. However, everything else on the disc pushes the boundaries.

The trio opens and closes the set with tunes by the New York-based trumpeter Andre Canniere: "Thirteen Species" and "Realizing." Both, like much of this material, have a mildly (and... read more

Michael Dease - The Other Shoe: The Music of Gregg Hill
by John McDonough, DownBeat

Michael Dease drops The Other Shoe only eight months after his last, Next Best Thing, which was a neat and literate little small-band bouquet. This time, the front line is smaller with Dease on trombone (and occasionally baritone sax) and newcomer Virginia MacDonald on clarinet, an unlikely but compatible twosome.

Focusing on the compositions of Gregg Hill, the program will be unfamiliar to most, giving listeners open-ended... read more

John Stowell | Michael Zilber - Live Beauty
by Chris Lunn, Ancient Victorys

Stowell's inventive, warm approach to the guitar with a delicate touch meets Zilber, whit his big saxophone sound and edgy intensity. They have found a musical vocabulary across the past decade in duo, trio and quartet formats. This is their second quartet undertaking and was recorded live at the California Jazz Conservatory in Berkeley, California. They are joined by the large warm sometimes rumbling bass work of John Shifflett and the... read more

John Stowell - Resonance
by Rob Forbes-Roberts, Acoustic Guitar, September 2005

Jazz guitarist John Stowell unplugs for a solo set on acoustic guitars built by Portland luthier Mike Doolin. Playing a variety of Doolin's steel-, nylon-, and 12 string guitars, Stowell performs several excellent originals and covers such jazz standards as John Coltrane's "Equinox," Steve Swallow's "Peau Douce," and Jerome Kern's "Nobody Else but Me." The various acoustic textures of Doolin's instruments are intriguing but it's Stowell's... read more

Andrew Rathbun Large Ensemble - The Atwood Suites
by Peter Hum, Ottawa Citizen

TOP 10 CANADIAN JAZZ ALBUMS OF 2018 The Toronto-raised composer and saxophonist, who is on faculty at the University of Western Michigan, released a splendid and ambitious double album in April, reuniting with some stellar talents that he previously made music when he lived in New York City. Rathbun's gorgeous compositions and orchestrations stirringly set the poetry of Margaret Atwood to music, and Luciana Souza's pristine voice looms... read more

Rich Thompson - Less Is More
by George W. Harris, Jazz Weekly

The pocket for Rich Thompson?s team of Terell Stafford/tp-fh, Doug Stone/ts, Gary Versace/p-B3 and Jeff Campbell/b is fit for a pair of Oshkosh overalls. A hip hard bop ?Lotus Blossom? and jaunty ?I?ve Never Been In Love Before? set a black diamond of a ski slope for Stafford?s cheery trumpet. Campbell?s bluesy bass oozes through a vibrant B3 on ?Hoot Gibson? and Stones? smoky tenor fills the room on a smooth as silk ?I Didn?t Know What Time It... read more

Dawn Clement - Break
by Peter Monaghan, Earshot Jazz

Nuance and soul are both earmarks of Dawn Clement's Break (Origin Records) where the pianist is joined by a fine rhythm section of bassist Dean Johnson and drummer Matt Wilson.

Clear, assured, nimble, and muscular articulation - in the manner of a Phineas Newborn Jr. - is matched to some of the varieties of thought and feeling that he, too, submerged just below the surface of fresh styling.

Clement sings on a few of the tracks.... read more

Richard Cole - A Glance Back
by Adam Greenburg, All Music Guide

The debut solo album from Richard Cole, a Seattle sax player with some pretty good chops. The tone is relatively high here, making use of squeaks and squeals as possible, and holding to a modern jazz ideal in general. The solos sometimes draw themselves out in a slow arc before moving on, but they showcase some very nice sensitivity in exploring the range. The jazz scene in Seattle picked up quite a bit after the release of this album, and this... read more
