MUSIC REVIEW:
Liam Sillery, “On The Fly”

VIEW THE CD DETAIL PAGE
A well known organist by the name of Joe Bagg is heard to great advantage on "On The Fly," a new issue from East Coast trumpeter Liam Sillery. This is his second recording following a solid debut in "Minor Changes" for the same label with tenor man David Sills on board but an entirely different rhythm section. That time out the only non-original was the late Billy Preston's "You Are So Beautiful" and this time around that distinction falls to Lee Morgan's "Ceora" with the remaining compositions evenly divided between the trumpeter and Sills. The majority of the numbers are up trumpet and tenor unison heads in the Hard Bop vein with lots of spirited blowing from all hands. The leader has a bright (but not brittle) tone and made this writer recall early Art Farmer and Kenny Dorham, and some of his phrasing made me think of early Miles. Add to the mix Sills is a saxophonist to contend with in all departments. He does something on his very up tune "Down The Line" that few are heard to do. During his opening solo he quotes "Oh, You Beautiful Doll" --not at the beginning of his phrase line or inside it but on the closing line, which made me chuckle. His composition "Fontok" should become a Jazz standard of sorts. Like the classic Horace Silver "Senor Blues" in 9/8, it has that kind of vibes with a "Song For My Father" AABA construction with the bridge breaking into a swinging four/four. Guitarist Larry Koonse porvides some fitting guitar work and Joe Bagg shoulders the load in the bass area along with adding some idiomatic soloing. Drummer Pleasant gets his share trading fours a taking percussive spots. A good one.
