All About Jazz

Discovering their musical kinship while attending the University of North Texas, Nova Scotia-based trumpeter/flugelhornist Paul Tynan and baritone saxophonist Aaron Lington from the Bay Area haven't let logistics get in the way of its ongoing development over the 16 years of this bicoastal partnership. Combining their original works, musician friends old and new, and specific concepts for each project, they've created five wide-ranging works, each spurring on the next incarnation of the collective. For Chapter Six, they pair with the New York rhythm team of electric bassist Trifon Dimitrov and drummer Joe Abba for a chord-less quartet where they explore sounds and timbres through electronics, grooves and aesthetics captured from late-stage Miles Davis, and generally open the door to the possibilities of the moment.

Jazz Weekly (George W Harris)
The longtime team of Paul Tynan on trumpet or flugelhorn with baritone saxist Aaron Lington continues to create clever and original sounds, as shown on their sixth adventure. With Trifon Dimitrov on electric bass and Joe Abba playing drums and percussion, the two mix rich harmonies and resonant solos in a variety of moods and pulses. Dimitrov la ...

All About Jazz (Jack Bowers)
In jazz terms, trumpeter Paul Tynan and baritone saxophonist Aaron Lington's Bicoastal Collective is a long-running series, as this marks the sixth recording produced during their sixteen-year partnership. As Chapters One to Five were splendid, it might have been advisable to close the book there. However, Tynan and Lington have chosen to forge ahe ...

WTJU (Russell Perry)
Both trumpeter Paul Tynan (Nova Scotia) and baritone player Aaron Lingston (San Jose) have serious classical music chops and both are master jazz players. For this, their sixth collaboration, they have chosen a chord-less trumpet – baritone – bass – drums quartet and it has nothing to do with the famous Gerry Mulligan / Chet Baker or Art Far ...

Jazz Views (UK) (Ed Sapiega)

Take Effect (Tom Haugen)
Paul Tynan brings his trumpet and flugelhorn skills to Aaron Lington's baritone sax prowess for these 6 involved pieces that are quite diverse and welcome Trifon Dimitrov and Joe Abba to the formula. "By Iron And Fire" opens the listen with frisky drums and bright brass populating the rhythmic and fluid landscape, and "Traveler From An Antique L ...
