...indeed, the quintessence of a jazz duo.
Dr. Herb Wong, Jazz Education Journal

Exploring the deep musical relationship developed over 5 years of performances at the Indianapolis club, Chatterbox, flugelhornist Mark Buselli and pianist Claude Sifferlin combine dynamic textures of colorful harmonies & enticing melodies for a duo album of great beauty. Named in honor and in spirit of the Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu, the duo decided to record with nothing laid out in advance. Other than the American classics, My Ideal, Stablemates, and The Nearness of You cast in new shades, all the other pieces of music are experimental in nature and were totally improvised.

Reviews of Take The Mitsu

Indianapolis Star (Jay Harvey)
This is about the best of this sort of thing you'll find anywhere. By "this sort of thing" I mean an instrumental jazz duo album, and it's a home-grown product that bears comparison with big-name duo excursions on major labels. The four-star rating doesn't mean it's an imperishable masterpiece. It doesn't even mean I'm convinced by every moment Ma ...

All About Jazz (C. Michael Bailey )
The flugelhorn has such a smooth, rounded tone that it can impart the warmest and most mellow ambiance to any instrument. When that recording is a piano duet, that warmth and mellowness are magnified dramatically. Warmth, not heat. While a virtuoso's instrument, the flugelhorn is also a specialty instrument. In the hands of Mark Buselli, one can se ...

All Music Guide (Adam Greenburg)
Take the Mitsu is an almost entirely spontaneously improvised album of jazz mildly in honor of composer Toru Takemitsu, recorded by Indianapolis jazzers Mark Buselli and Claude Sifferlen. The album opens up with the songbook standard "My Ideal," before moving quickly into some more progressive numbers, with the more energetic "Bhutan," and the almo ...

Jazz Review (Scott Gotschall)
Those who believe that jazz can only originate on the coasts have never been to Indiana. Beginning with Hoagy Carmichael and continuing through the Montgomery brothers, Jimmy Spaulding and many others, Indiana has played an important role in jazz history. You may then add to the history the inspired teachers, such as Jerry Coker and David Baker, wh ...

L.A. Jazz Scene (Russell Arthur Roberts)
Flugelhornist Mark Buselli and pianist Claude Sifferlen's album, Take the Mitsu, (the title, a play on the surname of Sifferlen's favorite 20th-century composer, Toru Takemitsu), is deliciously exquisite, bringing to mind similarly appealing duo recordings of Ornette Coleman and Charlie Haden (Soapsuds, Soapsuds), Arthur Blythe and David Eyges (Tod ...

Music Dish (Ben Ohmart)
You know you're in for a great evening's romance. And do wait for night to fall. It's coming earlier these days - about 5 o'clock - so you've got hours and hours to play these 50+ minutes over and over again. Except for the classic titles you recognize, the rest of the cd was improvised. And you can tell. It is a moody collaboration, falling si ...

JazzRadio247.com (Rick Holland)
If you like beauty and dynamic interplay between two masterful jazz improvisers, Take the Mitsu is a disc for you. These two musicians display great sense of melody and explorative harmonic interplay while creating a very entertaining and listenable set of music. Mark Buselli a Flugelhornist, Trumpeter and arranger from Indianapolis, Indiana, co-Le ...

Amazon.com (Amazon.com)
First of all let me say that I am a true jazz fan who enjoys the classic music such as Miles and Coltrane. Second of all let me say that I am a trumpet player, which means I am a bit biased in this review. But putting that aside, this is an excellent album with great chemistry between the two musicians. Buselli has a very personal tone on the fluge ...
